2012 Global Product Data Interoperability Summit announced

Boeing and Northrop Grumman will hold their fourth joint Global Product Data Interoperability Summit Nov. 12-15, at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos in Chandler, Ariz.

The theme of this year’s summit is “Product Data Quality Integrated Throughout the Value Stream.”

The summit has become the premier event for industry professionals concerned with interoperability issues that continue to challenge digital product data exchange. The event is held at no cost to industry professionals and supply chain partners in aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding and academia. At the conclusion of last year’s event, the organizers resolved to establish a formal mission to promote awareness, address tactical challenges, advance industry solutions and leverage open standards for product data interoperability – with a charter to drive common standards adoption in the global aerospace and automotive industries.

“Everyone shares a product data strategy of providing the right data to the right user at the right time in a cost-effective, managed way,” said Russ Benson, senior director of Information Technology and Engineering Systems, Boeing.

“The use of digital technology is now pervasive in every developed economy so there is extraordinary interdependence,” said Doug Norton, vice president and CIO, Technical Services sector, Northrop Grumman. “It has become imperative for suppliers in our industry to cooperate globally since this information exchange could originate from multiple design engineering tools as well as independent IT systems. Open standards-based interoperability is critical to making product solutions available and sustainable in this global economy.”

More than 30 vendors will also showcase technologies that address the business challenges of CAD/CAM/CAE data translation, validation and security. “The importance of the GPDIS to solutions providers cannot be overstated,” said Ken Tashiro, COO/vice president of Elysium Inc., which coordinates the event. “The synergies that result from these meetings have been measurable in software publications for years. The majority of brand name engineering software today is tuned to requirements learned from the GPDIS.”

Presentation abstracts addressing data processes, tools or formats in the areas of design, production and visualization are due by Aug. 17 to be included in the Summit. There will be closed sessions Nov. 12, followed by open technical presentations Nov. 13-15; content details will be released closer to the event.
