Workers removed air conditioning and handling units from the roof of a building on Los Angeles AFB, April 20. Four HVAC units were replaced as part of a Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning refurbishment project. Each of the units weighs approximately nine tons. In total the $5.9 million project will replace 15 roof-mounted package units and six chiller units over the course of five weekends.
The new units have a special coating applied to all the components, which enables them to operate longer in LA’s corrosive environment than the older units. Additionally, the new units are outfitted with premium efficiency components to maximize energy savings. It’s estimated that the new units will reduce base energy demand by at least 10 percent – saving $225,000 every year.
