Air Force Assistance Fund campaign launches Monday

The 2012 Air Force Assistance Fund campaign runs Monday through May 4 at Luke Air Force Base. The annual campaign collects donations to support the Air Force Aid Society’s various charitable programs.

The AFAS assisted more than 40,000 Air Force members and their families in 2011 with almost $18 million in assistance.

The sudden need for cash due to an emergency can happen to anyone. AFAS has assisted Air Force members for 70 years.

AFAS … there when you need us

Members in need of financial assistance for a spouse’s or child’s education could receive a $2,000 grant to help pay college expenses. The AFAS’s General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Program helped 3,000 college students last year and expects to make the same number of awards in 2012. The program has a better than 50-percent selection rate.

For spouses of service members who are deployed or on remote tours or Airmen assigned to their first duty station may be eligible for a free oil change and safety check through the Car Care Because We Care Program.

Last year the Luke Air Force Base Airman & Family Readiness Center assisted 329 individuals with emergency loans and grants that totaled more than $157,000. Nine Luke community members received $18,000 in Hap Arnold educational grants. More than $16,000 was distributed into the Luke community in the form of grants for Car Care Because We Care, Give Parents a Break, child care for those making a permanent change of station, Heart Link, Bundles for Babies and local spouse employment education programs.

The typical Air Force base receives two-to-four-times more assistance than is collected in the AFAF campaign. That is possible due to returns on investments and corporate donations.

The Air Force Aid Society is an example of Air Force members helping themselves. The AFAF campaign is the only activity designed to specifically and exclusively assist Air Force members.

Unit campaign officers will be contacting members soon.
