An F-16 sits idly on the flightline after a storm forced the pilot to divert to the Gila Bend Auxiliary Field May 9. The Gila Bend facility is roughly an hour drive southwest of Luke Air Force Base and provides another place for pilots to land if they’re not able to make it back to the base. The pilot landed there rather than trying to return to Luke through the storm and risk having a mishap or damaging the more than $20 million aircraft.
