I’ll admit that, but I find it difficult, okay, annoying, to listen to advice from my parents or friends.
What do they know, right? Well, after running into more than a few money problems, I finally decided to heed the advice of a friend and pick up Dave Ramsey’s “The Total Money Makeover.†And boy, was I in desperate need of a makeover.
From savings accounts to the myths of acquiring debt, Ramsey covers all the bases when it comes to money.
He starts in one place: the mirror. His blunt delivery style can take a minute to get used to, but can be just what some of us need to break our questionable financial habits.
Chapter 6, “Save $1,000 Fast: Walk Before You Run†stuck out to me the most.
A thousand dollars may as well have been a million dollars to me, but his views on saving made the mountain seem a lot smaller.
The best part of the book? It’s not sophisticated or complicated.
It’s not another hot-shot hedge fund guru or CNBC financial analyst telling you how easy it is to get your ducks in a row.
It’s a normal guy who is where he is today by using common sense and sacrifice.
Scattered throughout the book are countless inspirational stories from people who have made it out of just about any horrible financial situation thinkable. It was encouraging and reassuring to know that if I could just change the way I looked at money, I could start the road to a more financially fit life.
Humorous, yet insightful lines were scattered throughout the book.
“Change is painful. Few people have the courage to seek out change. Most people won’t change until the pain of where they are exceeds the pain of change.â€
“When it comes to money, we can be like the toddler in a soiled diaper.
“I know it smells bad, but it’s warm and it’s mine.â€
These words gave me a realistic, yet reassuring approach to my bank account.
Just reading it, however, isn’t all this book offers. Budgeting worksheets and other financial tools can be found in the back of the book. Plus, for just a few bucks more, you can purchase the “Total Money Makeover Journal†and the “Total Money Makeover Workbook.†Lining up my progress right alongside Ramsey’s advice truly allowed me to see exactly what I was doing right and wrong.
Whether you’re looking to get out of debt, save more money, or even just make wiser investment decisions, this book has everything you need to, “Live like no one else.â€
