People First June 8, 2012

Editor’s Note: The “People First” section is compiled from information from the Air Force Personnel Center, TRICARE, 56th Force Support Squadron, Airman and Family Readiness Flight, Veterans Affairs, the civilian personnel office and armed forces news services. Medical ‘C-code’ not a deployment disqualifier

Contrary to common belief, a medical assignment limitation code, commonly known as the “C-code,” does not disqualify an Airman from deployment, and it does not identify an Airman for medical discharge.

A “C-code” applied to a member’s profile for medical reasons is one of the various tools AFPC officials use to put the right person in the right place at the right time, said Lt. Col. (Dr.) Keryl Green,  the Air Force Personnel Center Medical Retention Standards branch chief.

“Our branch belongs to the assignments directorate,” she said. “We don’t actually make assignments, but we are integral to the success of assignment processes.

“We’re part of the medical evaluation process, so we work closely with the 76 Air Force medical treatment facilities, the physical evaluation board and AFPC enlisted and officer assignment experts.”

Ultimately, the branch’s goal is to make sure Airmen are able to support the mission, Green said.

AF consolidates field operating agencies

Three San Antonio-based field operating agencies officially consolidated with the June 1 initial operational capability announcement, Air Force officials said Monday.

The Air Force Personnel Center, Air Force Services Agency and Air Force Manpower Agency, FOAs under the Air Force Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services, are now the new Air Force Personnel Center, and efforts are underway fully integrate the agencies’ functions.

Air Force Secretary Michael Donley and Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz signed the FOA consolidation program guidance letter May 23, authorizing consolidation.

“Consolidating allows us to streamline processes, identify efficiencies and reduce overhead in the A1 enterprise,” said Lt. Gen. Darrell Jones, the Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services. “This just makes good business sense for the Air Force in today’s budget-constrained environment.”

The program guidance letter also confirmed that the name of the consolidated FOA will be the Air Force Personnel Center. However, the integrated agency will be a reengineered organization with processes designed to better serve Airmen.

“The new Air Force Personnel Center will be structurally different from the previous independent agencies, which will allow us to better focus our resources, effort and time on Airmen and families, force support squadrons and other A1 enterprise customers,” said Maj. Gen. A. J. Stewart, the AFPC commander.

Museum, base historians receive top honors

Robins Air Force Base is being recognized for how it showcases history and for the top-notch team that records it.

The Air Force History and Museums Program recently announced the Museum of Aviation’s exhibit, “Tuskegee Airmen: A Proud Heritage,” as the 2012 Air Force Heritage Award winner.

Dr. William Head and Diane Truluck, both base history office historians, were also awarded the Albert F. Simpson Award for Excellence in History Programs.

“It’s a great honor for our museum exhibit team to be recognized at the Air Force level,” said Dudley Bluhm, the Robins AFB Museum deputy director, in a recent press release. “This exhibit is about heroes, American heroes that kids and adults so desperately seek today. It’s been our honor to portray the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, black Americans who not only fought on the battlefield, but endured the prejudices of the day in order to keep all Americans free.”
