Drinking water report released

The Luke Air Force Base 2011 annual Consumer Confidence Report on drinking water quality was released July 9 by the 56th Aerospace Medicine Squadron Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight. The Environmental Protection Agency requires this report be available to the consuming public.

The consumer confidence report describes the presence of contaminants that may be in the drinking water and any health risks. There are currently more than 80 contaminants regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act. Most of these contaminants are not found in Luke drinking water.

The 56th AMDS BEE routinely monitors for microbial, organic and inorganic chemical contaminants, pesticides and herbicides, and radioactive contaminants at the frequencies required by federal and state law. These monitoring results are outlined in the full report.

The report identifies any violations the system has received in the past year and details health effects information associated with the detected contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses an immediate health risk.

If a situation arises where the water is no longer safe to drink, a notification will be released within 24 hours. Other instances of noncompliance such as missed monitoring and positive bacteriological results will be promptly reported in the Thunderbolt. The full consumer confidence report can be found at the base library, 56th Medical Group pharmacy lobby, 56th Fighter Wing Public Affairs, 56th AMDS BEE and will be posted online at www.luke.af.mil.

For more information about the consumer confidence report, call Tech. Sgt. Clyde Oliver, 56th AMDS BEE at (623) 856-7521.

For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
