Critical Days of Summer

Keep safety in mind when vacationing

Think ahead

If you’re planning a vacation in a warm climate, be sure to pack sunscreen, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing, sun hats, sunglasses and a cooler with water.

 

Secure home

Before leaving

✓ Unplug electrical appliances (except refrigerator)

✓ Turn off gas pilots and water faucets

✓ Lock all windows and doors

✓ Arrange for someone to pick up the mail

✓ Place newspaper delivery on hold

✓ Notify friends, relatives or neighbors of the vacation destination and how you can be reached

✓ Set a timer to turn lights on and off, or ask someone to do it

 

Road trips

Follow these tips for a smooth drive down the highway

➣ Keep the vehicle in good operating condition

➣ Anticipate heavy traffic flow and allow plenty of time to reach the destination

➣ Avoid driving long hours

➣ When towing a trailer or boat, ensure the hitch is secure and strong enough for the job

➣ Ensure electrical wiring connections are in good condition and lights are operating properly

➣ Practice backing, turning and stopping to acclimate to towing a boat or trailer

➣ In an emergency, pull off the road and turn on flashers

➣ Observe all traffic laws

➣ Beware of weather and traffic conditions

➣ Have a first-aid kit

➣ Don’t drink and drive

➣ Wear seat belts

In addition to prescription medication, bring along medical information-insurance identification cards and identify where the closest hospitals are just in case you or a family member becomes ill or injured.”

Avoid sunburn

Protect skin by using sunscreens with a sun protection factor. Apply 1 ounce 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to bind to the skin. Reapplication of the sunscreen is just as important as putting it on, so reapply the same amount every two hours.

➤ SPF 15: or greater is sufficient for everyday activities with only a few minutes in the sun (like running errands)
➤ SPF 30: Keeps out 97 percent of UVB rays
➤ SPF 50: Keeps out 98 percent of UVB rays

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends everyone use sunscreen that is broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays), SPF 30 or greater and water resistant.

A sunscreen that offers all three helps protect skin from sunburn, early skin aging and skin-cancer. Dermatologists also recommend staying in shade when your shadow is shorter than you are and protect skin by wearing long sleeves, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
