Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Darlene Seltmann

Emalynn, left, 8 months, daughter of Master Sgts. Zar and Candi Manabat, 56th Force Support Squadron, 56th Maintenance Operations Squadron; and Ivana, 9 months, daughter of Senior Airman Rickey Jackson, 56th MOS, share toys in the 6 weeks to 1-year-old room at the Child Development Center. There are four classrooms with babies in this age group.

The Child Development Center provides a safe, supervised environment for children from 6 weeks to 5 years old. The CDC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children that provides activities that entertain and assist the growth of children.

Reading, manipulative play, music, painting, water play, sand tables and outdoor play, when weather permits, are some of the activities available at the CDC. Playground equipment is shaded during warm summer months.

The CDC is open 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed on holidays and weekends.

Toddlers from the adventure classroom eat breakfast at the table. The CDC provides breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack.

There is generally a waiting list to sign-up at the center. The waiting list and eligibility criteria are used to determine placement. Special circumstances will be determined on a case by case basis.

Rates are determined on household income and are divided into nine categories. Rates also differ based on the child’s age.

Full-time care and drop-in hourly care is also offered for children 6 months and older on a space-available basis. Drop-in care is $4 an hour per child with a minimum of two hours per visit. After the first two hours the rates are charged in half-hour increments. The center also has an active sublet program for parents seeking care.

For more information, call the CDC office at (623) 856-6339.

Children ages 2 and 3 draw with chalk in the outdoor play area. There are four classroom age groups: 6 weeks to 1 year, 1 to 2 years, 2 to 3 years and 3 to 5 years.

Elijah White, 19 months, son of Capt. Jamie Cherup, 56th Medical Operations Squadron, plays in the sandbox.
