Commander’s calls

Brig. Gen. Michael Rothstein, 56th Fighter Wing commander, will hold commander’s calls at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sept. 28 in the Bryant Fitness Center gym.

Active shooter exercise

The 56th Fighter Wing will conduct a base-wide active-shooter exercise Thursday. Community residents and visitors to the base should expect disruptions, gate closures, or delays and interruptions of customer service operations. They should also expect the possibility of seeing explosions, smoke, role players depicting injuries and emergency responders to include fire, police, ambulances and medical evacuation helicopters integrating off-base fire and police departments and Maricopa County authorities. POW/MIA retreat

The Luke Air Force Base annual POW/MIA recognition day retreat ceremony is 4 p.m. today at the base flagpole. For more information, call Master Sgt. Emory Flagg at (623) 856-3095.

Small business briefing

A small business administration briefing is 1 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Luke Air Force Base Airman and Family Readiness Center, Bldg. 1113. For more information or to reserve a seat, call (623) 856-6550.

Absentee ballots

States will continue to accept absentee ballot applications until the end of October. Military members, Defense Department civilians and dependents can register for an absentee ballot online at www.fvap.gov. If a state does not participate in online absentee ballot applications, voters are still able to fill out and print the application via the website and postage will be paid by Uncle Sam. Luke chapel adds new Mass

The Luke Catholic community will add a new Mass to the weekend worship schedule at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel on the Mall.

Service station closure

In order to process end-of-year transactions the base service station will be closed from midnight Sept. 29 to 11:59 p.m. Sept. 30. Vehicles must refuel prior to midnight Sept. 29. Emergency and first-responder vehicles can refuel at the Fuels Management Flight compound until 8 a.m. Sept. 30. Exceptions to these times must be approved by 56th Logistics Readiness Squadron Fuels Management. For more information, call (623) 856-7391.

Outpatient clinic closure

Luke Air Force Base Outpatient Clinic will be closed Sept. 28 for training. For more information, call (623) 856-4217.

Blood drive

A base-wide blood drive is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in the commissary parking lot and 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the 56th Medical Group clinic assembly room. Cross-cultural communication course

The Community College of the Air Force and the Air Force Culture and Language Center are offering, at no cost, Introduction to Cross-Cultural Communication, a distance learning course covering manifestations of culture, communication styles, paralanguage, nonverbal communication and active listening. Registration is Oct. 6 and class begins Oct. 11. For more information, call the education center at (623) 856-7722.

Customer service updates

The 56th Comptroller Squadron, in coordination with the base installation deployment office, is forming the defense travel system team to create twice-weekly deployment in-processing sessions. The 56th CPTS training room will be manned 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday to help returning deployers with travel vouchers. Other base agencies have joined to create a one-stop-shop for returning Airman to complete their checklists. After-hours appointments will also be offered. Free golf tournament

Military members, retirees and their dependents are invited to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship Oct. 31 through Nov. 4 at Cochise Course at the Desert Mountain Club in Scottsdale. Admission is free. Military Appreciation Day is Nov. 3. For more information, go to www.schwabcup.com.

Operation KIDS

Operations KIDS is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 20 at Camp Thunderbolt, Bldg. 400 on Luke Air Force Base. It is a simulated deployment experience for children ages 6 to 15. Registration is 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Allen Readiness Center at 5636 E. McDowell Rd., Bldg. M5260, Phoenix; 2 to 7 p.m. Oct. 9 and 11 at the Airman and Family Readiness Center, Bldg. 1113. Martial arts training

The Marine Corps Martial Arts Program will mentor the first all-Airmen instructor lead MCMAP tan and grey belt course at Luke Air Force Base 6:30 to 8 a.m. Nov. 26 through Dec. 21. The class is limited to 20 people, includes a health screening and paperwork due by Nov. 16. For more information, call the Bryant Fitness Center at (623) 856-6241.
