An Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century Excess Inventory Redistribution/6S event was held at Luke Air Force Base. It helped members of the Luke Air Force Base weapons back shop organize needed on-hand supplies and identify excess inventory that will eventually be redistributed across the base.
This single event is one of many happening across Luke AFB and one that will eventually happen in every organization. Gen. Philip Breedlove, U.S. Air Forces in Europe commander, directed this money saving initiative when he was vice chief of staff of the Air Force as a way to help units get the things they need and redistribute the things they don’t. Resources are progressively thinning, and the money to just go buy more is simply not there.
It’s called “Luke’s Craig’s List” due to the similarity of purpose. Units at Luke are able to list their excess and anyone assigned to the base is able to acquire needed items for their unit. A recent example is unneeded office chairs. Shortly after the owners listed the items, another unit, in the process of buying new furniture, took the excess chairs, saving that unit $1,250.
There are other similar examples. As of August there was almost $153,000 worth of items listed on the 56th Fighter Wing SharePoint site. More than $47,000 worth of items have been redistributed or will be.
How do I get involved?
Identify what you don’t need and list it on the site. All excess is loaded onto the wing SharePoint. The site can be accessed through the main 56FW SharePoint site by clicking on “Luke Excess Inventory List.” The site works for redistribution of unneeded items and is a place for the organization to seek out things it needs. This is a welcome relief to the Luke resource advisors since this is now the first stop for anyone trying to acquire needed office supplies and equipment.
What about the fine print?
As with any thing there are dos and don’ts. Anything such as computers (ADPE) and equipment that is listed or tracked can be listed, but the required transfer paper work must be done. Also the target items are office equipment and supplies. Avoid listing items that are inoperable or obsolete.
