Chapel opens door to free festival for Luke community

Dianne Nowicki paints the face of Liam Sather, 10, at Hallelujah Night at Luke Air Force Base Oct. 28, 2011. Games, food and live entertainment were provided to all participants of this annual event held by the Luke Chapel.

A free fall festival is open to the Luke Air Force Base community from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Luke Community Chapel.

The 56th Fighter Wing Chapel will hold the 39th annual Hallelujah Night Fall Festival. Candy, food, and activities, such as singing puppets, mimes, balloon making, a petting zoo, rock wall, face painting, bouncy castles, pony carousel, sumo wrestling, storytelling and numerous carnival games are included. A few of the biggest hits are the petting zoo, pony rides, puppet show and the magic balloons.

The event was originally launched by the late Rev. Lee Montague in Avondale.

“Since its beginning, Hallelujah Night has grown from 20 attendees to more than 600, and we expect the number to grow this year,” said Shelicia Greer-Cannon, 56th FW Chapel Protestant Program director. “Each year we try to add a new activity or attraction that we think the children may like.

“The chapel community consists of many people who look forward to supporting Luke members by volunteering their time to enhance both the spiritual and physical needs of all. This is just one example of how the chapel gives back to the community.”

The chapel sponsors the spiritual maintenance center for the flightline personnel, the Oasis for the single Airmen, and vacation bible school every summer.
