Qualified disabled make contribution in work place

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. In observance of the month, the NDEAM committee is featuring a luncheon Oct. 26 at Club Five Six.

The observance dates back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week of October in each year National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week, according to Tech. Sgt. Lyndsey Lemus, 56th Force Support Squadron Airman Leadership School instructor.

“In 1962, the word ‘physically’ was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities,” Lemus said. “Then in 1988, congress expanded the week-long celebration into a month and changed the name to what we know today.”

As NDEAM is important for those in the civilian sector, it is equally important for service members to observe the month.

This year’s theme, chosen by the Department of Labor is, “A Strong Workforce is an Inclusive Workforce: What Can You Do?”

“Luke celebrates NDEAM since it is a national campaign that raises awareness about disability employment issues and honors the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities,” said Master Sgt. Sheris Poisson, 56th FSS ALS commandant. “In addition, people with disabilities represent the single largest group of minorities seeking employment in today’s marketplace.”

The luncheon is open to all.

“This luncheon brings awareness and recognizes disabled personnel. I encourage everyone to join us,” Poisson said.

The luncheon is 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Club Five Six.
