607th ACS seizes championship from 56th CS

The 607th Air Control Squadron defeated the 56th Communications Squadron Oct. 11 at the Bryant Fitness Center football field by a final score of 19-6 to become the intramural flag football champions.

The teams arrived in the championship game from different paths. ACS made their way by defeating every opponent, while CS fell into the loser bracket and fought its way back into the championship by winning four games in two nights.

The game started with ACS in control of the ball. During the drive, ACS’s quarterback ran for 30 yards and completed several passes, including one for a touchdown. The team was unable to get the extra point making the score 6-0.

Scoring on the first drive was key; it set the momentum and got the team’s confidence up, said Michael Shea, 607th ACS.

CS started its first possession with a forward pass penalty (throwing the ball when past the line of scrimmage). Moments later, the team turned the ball over, as they were unable to get the first down.

As the first half went on, neither team was able to put any points on the board.

At half time, Robert Smoot, CS, told his team they needed to cut down on mistakes, get back to the fundamentals, catch open passes, get first downs and try to score.

For ACS’s team, they made adjustments on defense and kept everything the same on offense.

CS opened the second half with a 20-yard run from their quarterback, Myles Morales. After the run, CS couldn’t get a first down allowing ACS to start at midfield.

The ACS drove down the field and scored with 10:45 left in the game making the score 12-0.

After completing several long passes, CS answered right back on the next set of downs making it 12-6 with 7:12 left.

But before CS could tie the game or take the lead, ACS pushed the ball down the field extending the lead to 19-6.

With just over two minutes left in the game, CS went into a hurry-up offense and quickly drove down the field. After reaching the 17-yard line, Morales threw an interception with 47 seconds left.

“Their defense is definitely the best we faced all year,” Smoot said. “They had a pretty good game plan, and overall they played better than us.”

After taking control of the ball, ACS ran the clock out and was named champions of the 2012 fall intramural flag football season.

“This was our first flag football championship,” Shea said. “This is good for morale and we will try to keep it for next season.”
