In Brief – November 30, 2012

AETC base-wide exercise

The 56th Fighter Wing will conduct an active-shooter exercise Wednesday and Thursday. All of Luke Air Force Base personnel, including all civilians and retirees who are on base for appointments/shopping, will play in this exercise. This will include being unable to leave the base and hunkering down under tables for up to several hours. To be excluded from playing in this exercise, it is advisable to plan a visit to Luke AFB outside of these dates, especially Wednesday from 8 a.m. to noon. Expect traffic disruptions, gate closures or delays, and interruptions of customer service operations. People can expect to see emergency vehicles and response aircraft in the area throughout the day.

Airman cookie drive

Cookies for the 2012 Airman Cookie Drive will be collected 7 to 10 a.m. Dec. 10 at Club Five Six. Those interested in making cookies must email LukeCookies@yahoo.com. Cookies will be distributed to Airmen staying on Luke Air Force Base for the holidays.

Thrift shop

The thrift shop is open 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for consignments and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for sales Wednesday and Friday in Bldg. 750. The staff accepts clothing, household goods, furniture, small appliances, hardware, etc. For more information on items that are not currently being accepted or prior to dropping off large items, call the Thrift Shop at (623) 935-5782 during business hours. All profits are donated to the Luke Officer Spouses Club Welfare Fund to help finance welfare projects throughout the Luke community.

Rental housing on base

Balfour Beatty Communities are accepting applications from active-duty military members from all branches of service to include Guard, Reserve; unaccompanied military members with or without dependents, federal civil service employees, retired federal civil service, retired military members and their families, Defense Department contractors and their employees; and also foreign military service members. For more information about BBC leasing options which require no first and last month deposit, no pet deposit, free utilities (electricity, garbage, water), 24/7 security and more, call (623) 388-3515 or Rodney Marks at the housing referral and relocation office at (623) 856-7643.

Possible Litchfield Road closure

Litchfield Park plans to build a pedestrian underpass on the north side of the intersection of Litchfield Road and Wigwam Boulevard that may result in a full closure of Litchfield Road north of Wigwam Boulevard for two months beginning in January. Litchfield Park will establish detour routes during the closure. For more information, call ADOT at (855) 712-8530 or go to Projects@azdot.gov.

Adopt-a-family

Adopt a child, family or families by donating requested items. A Christmas tree with paper angels attached is in front of the base exchange with children’s names, ages, gender, clothing sizes, and/or special gift requests to make shopping easier. Donating individuals select an angel, purchase the listed items, attach the angel to the bag of unwrapped, labeled gifts and place it in a donation box located near the Christmas tree by Dec. 14. Gift cards, cash or check gifts should be placed in an appropriate package for transport (i.e. an open cardboard box or an unsealed envelope). For more information on adopting a family, call Master Sgt. Larry Morgan at (623) 856-8546 or Master Sgt. Renee Huggins at (623) 856-3304.

Transition seminar

The Airman and Family Readiness Center is featuring a Marketing Yourself for a Second Career seminar 8 to 10:30 a.m. Dec. 13 in the base theater. Transition is a part of all military careers. The seminar is for those contemplating retirement in one to five years or those who may be counseling someone about to transition. It is an in-depth, all-in-one resource for the transition process. The speaker is retired Col. Dan Koslov, Military Officers Association of America transition services deputy director. It includes comprehensive information on the retirement decision itself, employer perceptions, the competition, resumes, cover letters, job search, networking, career fairs, interview techniques, salary negotiation, benefits packages, the current job market and other topics. Spouses are encouraged to attend. All who attend will receive a free copy of “Marketing Yourself for a Second Career.” For more information or to register, call the A&FRC at (623) 856-6550.
