Chaplain thoughts – December 7, 2012

“Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming it.”

~ Helen Keller

I wrote about optimism last week and want to continue that theme today.

There is no question about the absolute horrors that happen in our world.

People starving, homeless, held in slavery, beaten for their beliefs, sickness and death … and most Americans will never know these. So what’s a person to do to make a difference? First, what not to do is give up! We must take action; do not let apathy enter the equation. We must focus on the task of being “overcomers.” Whatever the adversity presented in our lives and the lives of others, we must overcome. Isaiah 40:31 tells us, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

Blessings from Above …

Common sense, simplicity play lead role

There are numerous resources describing the attributes of extraordinary leaders, and one could spend countless hours sorting through data to supplement their toolkit. However, as with most things, common sense and simplicity should play a factor in any leadership situation. Throughout my Air Force experience, I have witnessed the same basic and successful qualities in...

Chaplain’s thoughts …

Theodore Hesburgh who was president there for 35 years. In his prayers he often asked God, “To those who have hunger, give bread; to us who have bread, give...

Fly Over: ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘Straight Outta Compton’

‘Fantastic Four’ Why one star you might ask? To be honest I should give it half a star for wasting my time, but that’d be a little harsh since the movie wasn’t down-right awful. I was going to write a review about how a...

‘Comm-Bats:’ Small unit, big job

There is a relatively small, unknown building at Luke Air Force Base across the street from the base library. It houses nearly 50 individuals who make up a team of dedicated hard-working bats. These aren’t your run of the mill Chiroptera (Greek for bat). These are 56th Communications Squadron “Comm-Bats.” Inside the walls of Bldg....

Communication: So what you’re saying is …?

“Genuine leaders have the ability to articulate, initiate and follow-through on their vision.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This quote from King epitomizes the importance of developing our communication skills as leaders and managers. As we get older, many of us get set in our ways and live by the phrase, “This is who...
