New fees for pets traveling to Germany

Germany has instituted new import fees for animals entering the country from outside the European Union. These fees took effect Feb. 1 and are being charged to cover the costs of examination by a German veterinarian at the port of entry into the country. The new program is in accordance with the EU regulation for the import of animals, and is being done to help prevent the introduction and spread of rabies throughout the European Union.

Key points for pet owners:

The import fee for animals arriving at the Ramstein AFB PAX terminal will be €55 per EU health certificate up to three animals and is payable by credit card only. Pet owners should notify their credit card company of their travel plans to be sure there will be no problems with payment.

The import fee for animals arriving at the Frankfurt International Airport is per animal and can be paid in cash (Euro) or by credit card. The import fees consist of the following:

• Basic fee of €55.

• Pets flying unaccompanied incur an additional €18.

• If owners can prove they were on the same flight as the animal, the fee is reduced to €35.

• On weekends and German holidays the fees are increased by 50 percent.

If pets are flying into another location in Germany you will need to contact the border inspection office at that airport for information.

Pet owners may import a maximum of three pets of one species without an import license; however, the animals must not be going to a new owner. The import of pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers, and Staffordshire bull terriers and their crossbreeds is prohibited.

For more information and assistance with health certificates for pets, call the vet clinic at (623) 856-6354.
