Verde Canyon railroad, glimpse of old Southwest

The train crosses a bridge Feb. 9 during the Verde Canyon railroad tour in northern Arizona. The 38-mile trip begins in Clarkdale and goes to the Santa Fe/Burlington Northern track at Drake.

Known for many scenic vistas and glimpses of animal and bird life along the way, the tour offers views of the undisturbed high desert.

The train’s engine goes to the opposite end of the train at the midway point of the tour to return to the station. The trip is approximately four hours long, and the train passes through a 680-foot manmade tunnel. The tunnel was blasted through solid limestone and is supported by timbers for about 30 feet at the north end.
