April: Sexual Assault Awareness Month

12 main reasons incidents go unreported:

  • Didn’t know how to report
  • Feared retaliation or that the incident would happen again
  • Did not trust the reporting process
  • Concern over protecting identity
  • Did not want to cause trouble in the unit
  • Fear of being treated badly if reported (44 percent female – 31 percent male responses)
  • Didn’t want family to know
  • Didn’t want superiors to know
  • Lack of proof that incident happened
  • Didn’t want fellow Airmen to know
  • Not clear it was a crime or that harm was intended
  • Did not think it was serious

Seven main reasons victims file a report:

  • To get help after the incident
  • To get medical care after the incident
  • To catch or find the person
  • Because it is a crime
  • To prevent further crimes against the victim by that person
  • To punish the person
  • To stop this person from committing other crimes against anyone else
