Earth Day is Monday and Luke Air Force Base leaders are encouraging Airmen, civilians and families to help conserve base resources.
“Conserve Today – Secure Tomorrow” is the Air Force’s theme for this year’s Earth Day. The focus is on water conservation and resource management.
Air Force leaders have set a 26 percent reduction goal of water consumption by 2020 based on fiscal 2007 levels. Landscaping, construction, pollution, facility designs, aging infrastructure and normal daily use all contribute to Luke’s consumption of water. Energy program specialists with the 56th Civil Engineer Squadron say the 56th Fighter Wing has used approximately 44.7 million gallons of potable (fit for human consumption) water and 5.4 million gallons of nonpotable (reclaimed waste water and nontreated well water) for irrigation and construction between the months of January and March.
