Commission on Air Force structure to meet

The National Commission on the Structure of the Air Force will hold its first public hearing June 4 in Washington, D.C. President Obama, the chairman and ranking members of both armed services committees recently appointed eight members to serve on the commission.

The 2013 National Defense Authorization Act directed the establishment of this commission.

The commission will conduct a comprehensive study of Air Force’s structure to determine if and how the structure should be modified to best fill current and future mission requirements with available resources. The commission’s report to the president and Congress is due Feb. 1, 2014.The commission will consider whether the Air Force:

• Meets current and anticipated requirements of the combatant commands

• Achieves an appropriate balance between the regular and reserve components, taking advantage of the unique strengths and capabilities of each

• Ensures the regular and reserve components have the capacity to support current and future homeland defense and disaster assistance missions in the United States

• Provides a sufficient numbers of regular members to provide a base of trained personnel from which reserve components could be recruited

• Maintains a peacetime rotation force to support operational tempo goals of 1:2 for regular members and 1:5 for reserve members

• Maximizes and appropriately balances affordability, efficiency, effectiveness, capability, and readiness

Arizona

Members of the 943rd Rescue Group from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base rescued a 17-year-old hiker May 22 who fell in a canyon while hiking in the Dragoon Mountains about 50 miles east of Tucson.

Oklahoma

Tinker Air Force Base Airmen volunteered May 23 to provide free food to people affected by the devastating tornado which damaged more than 13,000 homes May 20 in Moore.

Afghanistan

While the Afghan air force continues to take the lead and ownership of combat operations, they have also rapidly risen to the challenge of improving casualty evacuation procedures by using both the Mi-17 helicopter and Cessna 208 aircraft.

Nepal

A group of Airmen with the Air Force Seven Summits team reached the highest point of the world, Mount Everest (29,035 feet) early morning May 19. The success marks the first time a team of military members from any nation has reached the highest point on all seven continents.
