He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps
himself from calamity.
~ King Solomon
New York Yankees greats Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera had a tense exchange of words a few weeks ago over a relatively minor issue. How the players handled the situation illustrates the truth of this wise saying. Rivera humbly apologized and said, “It shouldn’t happen.” Chamberlain, on the other hand, when asked said, “I wouldn’t change it. I wouldn’t change anything I do in life.” One man, Rivera, wisely guarded his tongue and people view him as classy and professional. The other man, Chamberlain, brought calamity upon himself as people viewed his comments as rude, defiant and self-unaware. Often “less is more” when it comes to the words we speak.
