“If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape 100 days of sorrow.”

~Chinese proverb

There is a Chinese proverb that says, “If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape 100 days of sorrow.” Who among us doesn’t know the truth of this proverb? How often have we said or done something in a moment of anger and regretted it later? American film director Alexander Payne has said, “The biggest fear I have is to die with regrets …” As a minister for the last 20 years, one of the saddest things I have seen are family members at funerals broken hearted over unresolved conflict. Harsh words, vengeful acts and temper fits done in a moment of anger can destroy families and friendships. Let’s challenge ourselves to seek patience the next time we are angry. Perhaps a brief moment of patience can save us from the pain of regret. And – if we should fail, there is another option. The words “I’m sorry” can help heal the hurt we’ve caused.
