Aug. 8, 1996: 21st FS activates at Luke AFB
The 21st Fighter Squadron activated on Aug. 8, 1996, at Luke Air Force Base to conduct F-16 Fighting Falcon training for Taiwan air force pilots.
The Taiwan government bought 50 F-16 aircraft through the Foreign Military Sales program. The purchase was a major step in the modernization of the Taiwan air force’s inventory. Since the Taiwan air force lacked F-16 experienced pilots, it paid the U.S. Air Force to train their pilots to fly the F-16 and become instructor pilots.
