The 56th Logistics Readiness Squadron battled the 56th Security Forces Squadron during an elimination intramural basketball playoff game Sept. 4 at the Luke Air Force Base Bryant Fitness Center Gym. LRS won the game 56-48, moving the team to the next round.

LRS finished the regular season with a record of 8-3 and SFS with a record of 3-8.

The basketball was thrown into the air for tipoff and the game began with high speed and intensity on both ends of the court. LRS began the game with a 5-0 run, but that did not stop SFS from giving it all they had. Each team pushed the ball up the court as much as possible, but SFS struggled to get rebounds, which gave LRS the lead at the end of the first half by a score of 20-18.

The LRS team made strategic changes during halftime.

“We just played our game,” said Jovonte Atkins, 56th LRS fuels operator. “We couldn’t let calls frustrate us. We just had to keep our heads in the game and stay focused.”

As the second half began, LRS worked as a team and was able to score seven unanswered points, bringing the score to 27-18 with 11 minutes to go. SFS tried to narrow the deficit, but LRS continued making easy buckets to keep a double-digit lead. SFS was in extreme foul trouble with more than 13 fouls in the second half, which LRS took advantage of to increase their lead.

Led by Anthony Snow, who scored 23 points, LRS was able to sustain their lead and win the game.

“We’re trying to work on becoming two-time champions,” said Rodolfo Perez, 56th LRS individual protective equipment operations supervisor. “We’re missing a lot of players, but with the talent we have right now I believe we can make it all the way.”

The mission will always press on, but without...
