Fly Over: ‘Ip Man’, and ‘Grand Theft Auto 5′

Ip-Man

‘Ip Man’

Being the Netflixer I am today, I came across a movie named “Ip Man” and honestly, I just looked at the high rating it earned and decided to watch it.
“Ip Man” is a film from Hong Kong and is, to some extent, based on the life of Yip Man, grandmaster of the martial art Wing Chun and also Bruce Lee’s master.
The movie takes place in the 1930s in Foshan, China, also the focal point of Chinese martial arts.
In Foshan, Ip (Donnie Yen) is the most talented martial artist, but he doesn’t show off his skills. He spends most of his time with family and friends. Unlike the other local masters, Ip doesn’t see a need in starting his own martial arts school since he already lives a comfortable, wealthy life. Every now and then Ip will get challenged by a local master and always wins but keeps the outcome of the duel to himself.
One scene I really enjoyed was when master Liu (Chen Zhi Hui) challenged master Ip to a duel. Ip deflected every move Liu tried and didn’t even look fazed by him. Toward the end of the fight, Ip brings Liu to the ground and imitates punching him several times in the head signifying that he has defeated Liu. He then brings him politely up on his feet and brushes the dust off his clothes and respectfully walks him out and promises to never speak of the fight.
Unfortunately, Ip’s good fortune comes to an end when the Japanese invade China in 1937, forcing him and his family out of their home. Ip now lives in a rundown part of town but is grateful to still have his wife and son by his side. He takes a job working as a coal miner but sees that it’s still a struggle to feed his family. Meanwhile, Miura (Hiroyuki Ikeuchi), a Japanese general, creates an arena where Chinese martial artists duel with his military trainees. For every match won, the Chinese challenger receives a bag of rice.
Ip initially declines to participate in the matches until his friend Lin goes missing. Ip goes to investigate the arena and requests to fight ten of Miura’s men at once. He defeats every opponent, impressing Miura and leaving him wanting to know more about Ip and his skills. Miura ends up finding a way to capture Ip and gives him an option of life or death. Instead of choosing, Ip challenges Miura to a fight that would possibly spark a change and give hope to all Chinese citizens to fight back.
I have to say, “Ip Man” is now my favorite martial arts movie. It’s also hard to not like Ip’s character because he always has a gracious, polite manner to him. Yen does a very good job in playing Ip since he also has a martial arts background. It was the perfect recipe for Yen to play Ip.
After watching “Ip Man” you may find yourself wanting to learn the Wing Chun martial arts style. I know I did.
“Ip Man” is rated R for violence.

‘Grand Theft Auto 5′

Grand Theft Auto is one of the most popular game series ever, known for its open world game play and over-the-top violence. Rockstar Games, the developer of the GTA series, has perfected the art of open world game play, and it truly shows in GTA 5. But while the game shines with its amazing game play, its real highlight is the three-man character storyline.
GTA 5 allows gamers to play as three characters: Michael, Franklin and Trevor. The game starts with an armed robbery and you playing both Michael and Trevor. You are introduced to the concept of ‘character swap’ in which you can switch characters during missions and free roam. The character swap lays the foundation of what Rockstar has used as the backbone to the entire story of GTA 5.
The three characters are unique, but all have similar situations.
Michael is a 40-year-old ex-convict who’s dealing with a midlife crisis. His wife is cheating on him with a yoga instructor, his son is a gamer and drug addict and his daughter wants to partake in the adult film industry.
Franklin is an up-and-coming gangster who wants to move out of the hood. If you’ve ever played GTA: San Andreas, CJ, the lead character, will remind you of Franklin.
And then there’s Trevor, the insane maniac criminal who runs a drug and illegal arms trade from his house. Trevor enjoys killing and his violent behavior is mostly fueled by drugs, alcohol and a messed up childhood.
All three characters have their separate lives, which wind up overlapping during the course of the game. Even though their missions overlap, they also have exclusive missions, which keep you going back to each one of them.
The three characters have individual skill sets and special abilities that can be accessed at any time in the game. Franklin can slow down time while driving, Michael can slow down time while shooting, and Trevor has a “rage” mode, which makes him unstoppable and increases damage.
The storyline is excellent, but just wandering around the game is just as amazing as playing the story. There are so many activities to do in GTA 5 such as tennis, yoga, hiking, golfing, cycling, scuba diving, hunting and more.
Grand Theft Auto was definitely worth the wait. With over-the-top action, beautiful graphics and open-world game play, this is a game that will keep you entertained for hours.
GTA 5 will go down as one of the greatest games in video game history, well that’s until GTA 6 comes out. If you appreciate open world gaming and causing overall mayhem, I highly recommend this game.
This game is rated M for explicit activities and language. Parental guidance is strongly advised.
