61st FS reactivation

The 61st Fighter Squadron will reactivate as an F-35 Lightning II training squadron in a ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 25 in Club Five Six. Lt. Col. Michael Ebner will assume command.

Boots to business

The Luke Air Force Base Airman and Family Readiness Center is featuring a two-day transition assistance program self-employment intensive training workshop from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 6 and 7 at the A&FRC. The purpose of the workshop is to learn how to start a business, what business ideas are feasible and to get assistance in developing a plan for future ventures. To be eligible, attendees must be a transitioning service member, veteran or spouse interested in starting a business. To register or for more information, call 623-856-6550.

Water interruption in base housing

Water services will be interrupted to repair a water leak from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 24 in base housing. After repair is completed, allow water to run for 10 minutes to allow system to clear. For more information, call Balfour Beatty Communities housing office at 623-388-3515.

Tres Rios nature festival

Tres Rios nature festival and 5k river run are 9 a.m. Oct. 26 adjacent to Phoenix International Raceway at 7602 S. Avondale Blvd. The event is free. The early registration fee for the 5k is $20 with an additional $5 discount when using the code: LUKE262013. To register, go to http://gbump.com/. After Oct. 23, registration is $35 per person. Energy action month tip

Programmable thermostats help reduce heating and cooling costs by adjusting the temp up or down when no one is home. Ideal settings are 69 degrees in the winter and 76 degrees in the summer. Each degree up in the summer and down in the winter saves 2 percent on air conditioning costs.
