Holiday hours

All vendors in the Exchange and commissary complex will be closed Nov. 28 in observance of Thanksgiving Day. Exchange concession hours vary for Nov. 29, 30 and 31. Check with individual vendors.

Dorm holiday party

The 56th Fighter Wing Chapel and Fighter Country Partnership are hosting a dorm–dwellers holiday party 6 p.m. Dec. 5 at Club Five Six. Gaming systems and tournament, food and more than $5,000 worth of prizes are included free to Airmen living in the dorms. For more information, call 623-856-6211.

Oasis events

The Oasis is featuring the following events for Airmen.

YES program

The Air Force Aid Society Youth Employment Skills program is an on-base youth volunteer program offered at Luke Air Force Base for high school-aged dependents of active-duty/Title 10 Air Force members to learn work skills while having a positive impact on their base community. Certified and enrolled high school students can “bank” volunteer dollar credits toward their post-secondary education/training at $4 per hour volunteered in an on-base position up to $1,000 maximum over four years of high school combined. Marketing for second career

“Marketing Yourself for a Second Career” is a free professional development lecture being offered to officers and senior enlisted who plan to leave the service in the near future, civilians, spouses, and retirees. Connecting families

Daddy Read a Book connects deployed parents with children at home by providing them with a free video of the parent reading a favorite book. Reading sessions are conducted 9 a.m. to

Home-buying seminar

The Luke Air Force Base Housing Management Office and Airman and Family Readiness Center are featuring a home-buying seminar for military members, retirees, Defense Department civilians and their families 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at the A&FRC office in Bldg. 1113. There will be information on how to obtain a VA loan and the benefits of the program and a brief on the financial aspects of home buying. To sign up, call Rodney Marks at 623-856-7643.

National Fine Arts Exhibit & Competition

Youth, ages 6 to 18, submit artwork now through Nov. 30 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Fine Arts Contest and Exhibit Dec. 16 through 20 at the Luke Air Force Base Youth Center. Artwork must have been completed in 2013 and will be judged in the following categories: monochromatic and multicolored drawings; pastels, watercolor, oil and acrylic paintings; mixed-media and collage, sculpture; and group projects. Poetry contest

Luke Air Force Base military families can participate in the family poetry writing contest, “My Military Family Thanksgiving,” in observance of National Family Week Nov. 17 through 23. Active-duty and retired military families are invited to participate. Each family member must contribute. This rhyming poem must be written in “Name” format: the family surname must be spelled out vertically, with each letter used to begin a new stanza describing your family’s Thanksgiving experience and traditions. First, second, and third place winners will be awarded. Entries must be submitted to the Youth Center by Nov. 20. Base-wide exercise

The 56th Fighter Wing will conduct an active-shooter exercise Dec. 18 which will include military and local, county and state law enforcement, and fire departments. Those traveling on base should expect traffic disruptions, gate closures or delays, and interruptions of customer service operations. Expect to see simulated explosions, smoke, role players depicting individuals with injuries, and emergency responders to include fire, police, ambulances and medical evacuation helicopters.

Recycles day

The 2013 America Recycles Day is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.today at the Team Luke recycling booth at Bldg. 1540. Household E-waste recycling is at the Balfour Beatty Communities maintenance facility at 1368 Kachina. To volunteer or for more information, call Oscar Mabry at 623-856-4748.
