Variety, challenge key to warrior fitness

If you’re looking for warrior training, you can find it from 6 to 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday at the Warrior Fitness Center at the Luke Air Force Base Bryant Fitness Center.

Matthew Corcoran, 56th Force Support Squadron fitness specialist instructor, teaches a variety of exercises as part of warrior training.

“The three areas we teach are pretty much gymnastics, weightlifting and endurance, with a lot of variations in those exercises, he said.”

Corcoran teaches his students how to do everyday things more effectively such as lifting and pulling. Students also get the added benefit of better athleticism.

“My main focus is performance,” Corcoran said. “I’m not really worried about ascetics, but that is one of the benefits of training if you work hard.”

Some people are hesitant to participate because of stories of the difficulty of the workout, doubts they’ll be able to do the exercise and possible injury, but Corcoran says there’s nothing to fear.

“I have never had an injury,” Corcoran said. “I know a lot of people are scared a little bit, but there is nothing to be scared of. You don’t have to be at a certain fitness level to try it. I can modify training. I can help you meet your workout goals and make passing your PT test a breeze.”

Stephan Sessions, Luke AFB Commissary assistant grocery manager, participates in warrior fitness training three times a week. He likes the variety of exercise.

“Every day is something new, and it’s always challenging,” he said.

Commander’s cup

The commander’s cup finals are Dec. 16 through 18 between the American and National league winners. It will be a best three out of five series. The sports are softball, volleyball, flag football, soccer and basketball. For more information, call the Bryant Fitness Center at 623-856-6241.

 

Hand-2-Hand Combative course

A Hand-2-Hand Combative Course will take place 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday Dec. 9 through 20 at the Bryant Fitness Center. Registration deadline is today. Marine Corps instructors will be instructing a 10-day course and upon graduation, participants will receive a gray belt and a certificate of completion. For more information, call 623-856-6241.

Holiday jingler tourney

The holiday jingler golf tournament is 8 a.m. Dec. 22 at Falcon Dunes Golf Course. The format is four-player scramble. The cost is $47 per club member, $52 per nonmember and $57 per guest, and includes green fees, range balls, cart rental, lunch and prizes. Register by Dec. 18. Aerobathon

A four-hour continuous aerobic exercise aerobathon with step, cardio, zumba and yoga is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 14 in the Combat PT Center, Bldg. 821. Sign-in is 8:30 a.m. The event is open to all Defense Department identification card holders ages 14 and older. The cost is $5 per person. For more information, call 623-856-6241.
