Base-wide exercise

The 56th Fighter Wing will conduct an active-shooter exercise Wednesday which will include military and local, county and state law enforcement, and fire departments. Those traveling on base should expect traffic disruptions, gate closures or delays, and interruptions of customer service operations. Expect to see simulated explosions, smoke, role players depicting individuals with injuries, and emergency responders to include fire, police, ambulances and medical evacuation helicopters.

Journey to Bethlehem

Experience a walk with Mary and Joseph on their way to Bethlehem and view a live nativity 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Chapel on the Mall. A petting zoo, arts and crafts, bouncy houses, photos with Santa and refreshments are included. For more information, call 623-856-6211.

oliday chapel services

A combined protestant service is 10 a.m. Dec. 22 at the community chapel. A Christmas Eve candlelight service is 6 p.m. Dec. 24 at the chapel on the mall. Christmas family Mass is 5 p.m. Dec. 24, midnight Christmas Mass is 12 a.m. Dec. 25 and Christmas morning Mass is
10 a.m. Dec. 25.

Kris Kringle Market, Santa visit

The Luke Air Force Base community is invited to the 56th Force Support Squadron Youth Center Kris Kringle Market and visit with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in Bldg. 1143. The free event includes a continental breakfast, crafts, games, gift giveaways and more. Santa’s Gift Shop will be open for children to shop for inexpensive gifts. Holiday open house

Military members with identification from all branches are invited to Operation Holiday Open House noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 21 at the Navy Operations Support Center, Bldg. 300 on Luke Air Force Base. The Oasis is featuring the following events for Airmen.

  • Dec. 24: Christmas dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the Oasis
  • Dec. 25: Christmas dinner at Neith’s
  • Dec. 31: New Year’s Eve party

MLK luncheon

The Martin Luther King Jr. luncheon is 11:30 a.m. Jan. 15, 2014, at Club Five Six. Tickets for the barbecue chicken buffet are $13 for E-4 and below and $15 for others. Tickets must be purchased by Jan. 10. The theme is “Striving for Dr. King’s Dream in the Fierce Urgency of Now!” To purchase tickets, call Staff Sgt. Jacqui Isom at 623-856-7001. Luke tax center seeks volunteers

The Luke Air Force Base tax center opens its doors to file returns for the entire Luke community beginning Jan. 27, 2014. To offer this service, the tax center relies solely on volunteers (active-duty, civilians and retirees) who become certified tax preparers through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Volunteers must be trained to be certified tax preparers. Work at least four hours per week in the tax center from

Give parents a break

The 56th Force Support Squadron Child Development Center and the Youth Center are offering free childcare in a safe, age-appropriate learning environment 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 21. The reservation deadline is today. The service is for active-duty Air Force families who are experiencing stress due to a temporary duty assignment, deployment or unique hardships associated with military life to take a break. Lunch and a snack are included. For children from infant to age 5, call 623-
