How do you win?

Aim High … Fly, Fight and Win! Our motto … our mission.

However, if you think about it, not everyone flies and not everyone fights. So how do we win?

Only 5 percent of our Air Force flies. Moreover, up to 12 percent are involved in direct combat operations. So what do the other 83 percent of us do to ensure the Air Force can win? Each of us aligns to the mission whether we fly or fight. Some directly support the warfighter. Some support those who support the warfighters.

I currently supervise the force protection section here in the 64th Expeditionary Support Squadron in Southwest Asia. We don’t fly and we don’t fight, yet we win every day. Without force protection we run the risk that those who wish to do us harm can carry out a plan that will do just that. The security and human intelligence gathering our team provides create preventive measures that let us meet the mission of the 64th Air Expeditionary Group, “Fight the Base.” Without force protection, the Department of State Foreign Military Sales training mission we provide could be endangered. Therefore, relations between the U.S. and its ally could be tarnished. This could lead to a diminished fighting force.

Some can be easy to see, such as combat arms training managers who train and maintain ground level weapons or the medics, emergency personnel and maintainers who provide direct support. Others can be harder to see as they fall down to second and third tier support levels. Yet, each tier of support is necessary to ensure our strength is not diminished. As Uncle Sam says, “We Need You!” We need all of you!

We all align to the mission; how do you? How do you ensure we can continue to fly, fight and win?

AF needs Airmen to maintain identity

Some of us may remember playing the pool game “Marco-Polo.” Some of us may still use this game to entertain our children at the pool today. One player closes his or her eyes and repeatedly shouts out “Marco” while the other players tread water and respond “Polo.” All the while, they attempt to shift quickly...

New evaluation system calls for accountability

It seems that everyone is overly concerned with the new evaluation system the Air Force is releasing. We should ask ourselves if it is really that scary to have an assessment which fits each of us in a more realistic way. This new system is going to hurt a lot of egos when they are...
