Security Information File Alert

A security information file is a collection of unfavorable information having a bearing on an individual’s loyalty, judgment, reliability or trustworthiness to protect classified information.

The criterion for an SIF establishment is set forth in DOD 5200.2R, Appendix 8 (criminal conduct, drug involvement, alcohol consumption, etc.). This file is established by an individual’s unit commander. Once established, the individual’s security clearance may be suspended or permanently revoked.

How can this affect a career?

Our Air Force is undergoing major changes; most notably force management initiatives, which seek to eliminate 25,000 Air Force personnel over the next five years. If your security clearance is suspended due to adverse behavior, you could find yourself a part of those very initiatives. Additionally, a suspended clearance could follow you outside of the Air Force if your next employment opportunity requires a security clearance (e.g. federal employment). Maintaining good order and discipline is a cornerstone of military profession. The choices you make can have a major impact on your career and in some instances, end it. Think before you act.
