An A-10 Thunderbolt II from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, practices attacking ground targets Feb. 20 at the Barry M. Goldwater Range in Gila Bend. The BMGR consists of 57,000 cubic miles of airspace where pilots practice air-to-air maneuvers and engage simulated targets. The range is the nation’s third largest military reservation and training range used by U.S. and allied pilots since September 1941. The A-10, also known as the “Warthog” or “Hog,” is designed for close-air support and attacking tanks, armored vehicles and other ground targets.
