The 56th Fighter Wing F-35 Academic Training Facility on Luke Air Force Base received the 2015 U.S. Air Force Design Award for facility design.
The 56th Civil Engineer Squadron served as the base organization, Albuquerque District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was the design agent and Burns McDonnell Engineering Company, Inc. was the designing organization.
The judges described the facility as a stunning, creative design with excellent material and finish choices, noting the use of a white roof, which is appropriate for the environment. The exceptional use of natural light, superb interior design with creative treatment of open bays and admin spaces were also noted.
The award also acknowledged the facility design establishes a base standard for future facilities and enables a major Air Force mission, that of training the world’s greatest F-35 Lightning II pilots.
