The March Field 16th Annual Inter-Services Golf Tournament was played at Soboba Springs Country Club, San Jacinto, on March 12.  Although participants were met with a morning blanket of fog, the plush greens and perfect airways quickly brightened up their day. The championship course was in pristine conditions for the April 5-8 Soboba Golf Classic, a part of the PGA’s Nationwide Tour.

The tournament was kicked off with a continental breakfast where teams mingled prior to donning their competitive hats for a putting contest. Claiming victory as the closest player to the hole was Bruno Lumague, 452 Maintenance Group.

By mid-morning the fog lifted to reveal perfect golfing weather; not too hot and not too cold.

Individual contests were set up at various holes throughout the course which determined the longest and straightest drives, and closest to the pin.

Winning the men’s longest drive was Bob Johnson, a retiree. Col. Pamela LeBlanc, 452 Mission Support Group, took first place in the ladies category.

The straightest drive competition was won solely by Bill Lamela, 729 Airlift Squadron.

Bobby Cox, a retiree, won the men’s closest to the pin contest, while Chief Master Sgt. Karen Krause, 452 Maintenance Operations Squadron, came in first for the ladies

“It was a perfect golf day. The tournament was fantastic! We had good participation and the course here was in perfect shape,” said Col. Pam LeBlanc, commander, 452 Mission Support Group. “Good food, good prizes and everyone seemed like they had a really great time.”

The main tournament event was a standard golf scramble with 4-person teams. A scramble is when each player tees off at each hole to determine the best ball. Each golfer’s second shot is taken from where the best tee shot landed. This process is repeated until the ball is holed.

The first place trophy and bragging rights for their 59-stroke win was team 4B consisting of Cary Kerr, Community Support Flight Chief for the 452nd Force Support Squadron and 196th Reconnaissance Squadron members Maj. Casey Thompson, Chief Master Sgt. Jim Blucher, and Master Sgt. Don Lazenby.

Team 2A came in second with David Butler, Mark Walker, Mike Stearman and Dean Braymer. First and second places were determined by a scorecard playoff as the teams ended with the same final score.

Bringing up third was team 16B with Scott Hall, 452 Air Mobility Wing, Todd Keneston, Tony Piedad, and Larry Higgs, falling just one stroke behind the first and second place teams.

Prizes were purchased with a generous donation from First Command Financial Services as well as with funds from the 452 Force Support Squadron, who would like to thank their volunteers Bruce Bailey, a retiree, spouse Brenda Kishi, and Jennifer McDow, 452 AMW, for assisting with the tournament.
