April – March C-17 and crew held hostage. Actors portrayed South Sudanese service members taking an offensive stance towards a U.S. military C-17 on their airfield, during filming for the Air Force’s Cultural and Language Center’s video series on cultural awareness, shot on base March 21. The footage completes the fourth and final video segment following Rwanda, Nigeria and Morocco, said Christine Frye, production coordinator, Combat Media. September – March Field hosts 40th-Annual Military Appreciation picnic. Some 5,000 March reservists, employees and their family members gathered at the 40th Annual Military Appreciation Picnic in LeMay Park, Sep. 8, from noon to 5 p.m. Picnic attendees feasted on cheeseburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, chips, soda, bottled water and ice cream treats, all free-of-cost, thanks to generous donations from vendors.The picnic is coordinated and hosted each year in a joint effort between the Moreno Valley Chambers of Commerce and the Silver Eagle Club. December – NASA’s Super Guppy: Air and space power working together. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Super Guppy, shown parked on the March Air Reserve Base transit alert pad, was tasked with transporting an enormous metal ring that will be used to test NASA’s Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle.
