Caring for oneself

When faced with both good and bad stressors, we have the obligation and responsibility to ensure our own well-being. After all, no one knows you better than yourself.

Your overall well-being includes maintaining the physical mental, and spiritual balance of your health. Whether you are in celebration or mourning, it is important to develop a system of checks and balances to keep you at the top of your game. Methods of caring for oneself are as unique as the individual. Never comparing yourself to others in these situations is important. Only you know exactly who you are, so you should be the first to determine if you need a little help.

Preventative measures may also be paramount in learning self-treatment. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of distress, gives you permission to give yourself a well-deserved break. Understand your limits and respect boundaries. Establish a support system in all aspects of your life. Seeking help in a time of need is not only a sign of maturity and strength, but also the first step to feeling better.

Ask yourself these questions: How am I feeling right now? Do I want to feel better? If you answered yes, then you are capable of determining the first step in treating yourself — deciding what you need. Whether it is simply treating yourself to a day off, or taking time to trust your friendly neighborhood mental health team, it is important to act upon your instincts. It is always best to familiarize yourself with the resources available to you and to feel comfortable enough to use them should the time come.

Being a wingman not only means caring for others, but also being at your best and fit to do so.
