50th Aerial Port members, families gather before deployment

Kids played around the jumper and piñata, while 50th Aerial Port Squadron members, their spouses and family members chatted and the familiar smell of burgers and sausages cooking on the grill permeated the air.

On this classic, Southern California, hot, July Saturday afternoon, the squadron’s deploying team was given a little something to remember home before their departure.

The Patriot Guard Riders of Southern California, led by Senior Ride Captain Craig “Gunny” Donor, also performed a flag line, symbolizing an endearing protective barrier of love and honor for the deploying team and the families.

“We proudly stand for those who stand for us,” said Patriot Guard Ride Captain Rick Nay.

“ The Aerial Port, led by Lt. Col. Mark Saragosa, commander of the 50th APS, will provide logistical support performing duties essential to the theater of operation,” said Senior Master Sgt. Robert Healey, deploying team chief.

Events like Saturday’s farewell picnic provide increased camaraderie among unit members and give families a chance to get to know each other, adding another layer of support while their loved ones are deployed.
