The combination of fitness and nutrition are both important components that help Airmen reach and remain fit-to-fight. For some, practicing push-ups and eating a balanced diet of healthy foods can be helpful. However, for Staff Sgt. Carrie Peasinger, Staff Writer in the 452nd Public Affairs Office here, she’s taking on a whole new way to stay fit-to-fight and a new challenge to build as much muscle as possible and become stronger while eating a 100 percent plant-based diet.
For Peasinger, who grew up in Nebraska eating meat and other animal products it was her sincere love for others, the planet and passion for health and fitness that led her to explore various documentaries leading her to become a veganist; someone who looks closely at all the implications of their food choices and chooses to lean towards a plant-based diet.
“I am always setting new aspirations for ways to stay and improve my fitness,” said Peasinger
In search of a vegan fitness program, she searched the internet, books, blog etc. and came across a vegan podcast called Veganbodyrevolution.com, hosted by Thomas Tadlock, M.S. and creator of the 28 day muscle building project, who states, “he has successfully cracked the code on how to build muscle and lose body fat on a 100 percent plant-based diet.”
Soon after she received an e-mail about a 28 day vegan muscle building case study, led by Tadlock, and Torre Washington, co-founder of case study and a pro natural body builder.
“The case study is our first attempt to take what we have done experientially and teach others how to build a large amount of muscle on a vegan diet and eventually create a product that can be distributed,” said Tadlock.
With the help of a professional vegan body builder and master trainer, she would be taught the steps to build as much lean muscle as possible in 28 days and decided to give it a try.
“Our mission is to change the entire stereotypical image of vegans; that they are weak and sickly looking. There isn’t a lot of material out there that teaches people how to build muscle without meat, so by creating this program we can teach people that it is possible to build muscle and create more strength if they learn how,” said Tadlock.
“Building muscle is a slow process, most people need three months to accomplish what we are going to accomplish in 28 days,” said Tadlock.
“I’ve run marathons and completed a few triathlons but I’ve never lifted as much weight as I am now, my goal is not to be a big body builder but to look and feel stronger and prove to others that it can be done eating plants.”
The 28 day program consist of a four-day-a-week exercise routine, exercising all body parts by the end of the week, using body-building exercises, varying the repetitions and sets completed for each exercise, eating a lot of muscle building foods; including a high amount of protein from vegan sources including, seitan, tofu, and protein powder, eating various sources of amino acids including, lentils, bean and legumes and vegetables, having a high fat intake and getting in omega three and omega six nutrients.
Since becoming vegan I feel more energetic, am more clear headed and feel vibrant, I look forward to seeing more strength from completing this program and taking my fitness to the next level, said Peasinger.
