March Air Reserve Base youth wins coveted 2013 award

17-year-old Austin McCoy accepts his award for Air Force Reserve Command’s Youth of the Year, 2013 from Maj. Gen. Alfred J. Austin S. McCoy, son of 452d Mission Support Group commander, Colonel Timothy and Debi McCoy was named Air Force Reserve Command’s 2013 Youth of the Year.

The 17-year-old attends Murrieta Mesa High School where he maintains a 3.5 GPA and is a member of the Varsity, cross country and track teams, engineering club and the California Scholastic Federation. Next year he will also compete on the robotics competition team.

Austin has been doing volunteer work since the third grade and has demonstrated his commitment to his community by completing 238 hours of volunteer work with the Boy Scouts, school activities and base events on March Air Reserve Base. Austin plans to continue his selfless service by doing patriot events in his community such as putting flags on grave sites, cleaning head stones and marching in parades.

His philanthropic aspirations include working with a Red Horse Squadron to build schools, hospitals and roads around the world. He would also like to do mission trips and build houses for the poor.

When asked, in an email, what advice he would have for others seeking to help out their community, Austin replied “Start early and find an organization you like working with, such as Boy Scouts.

Austin is also an Eagle Scout involved in a venture crew in Murrieta. After high school Austin plans to attend the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and study civil engineering.

The Youth of the Year program is offered through military teen programs in conjunction with the 22-year partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). The Youth of the Year program recognizes teens ages 14-18 years old for outstanding service, academic achievement, moral character and family values. This year marks the inaugural year for the BGCA Military Youth of the Year component in the competition.
