Extension of benefits and ID card issuance to same-sex spouses

In light of the Supreme Court’s ruling that section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional, the Department of Defense (DOD) will construe the words ‘’spouse’’ and ‘’marriage’’ to include same-sex spouses and marriages. Spousal and family benefits, including ID cards, will be made available to same-sex spouses. The Department of Defense will issue ID cards to same-sex spouses of Service members and eligible civilians beginning on September 3, 2013.

Effective date of benefits will be based on
date of sponsorship:

  • Married prior to 26 Jun 2013 will be 26 Jun 2013
  • Married after 26 Jun 2013 will be date of marriage
  • Required Source Documents:
  • Official Marriage Certificate from County
  • Photo ID (Drivers License or State ID not expired)
  • Original Social Security Card or certified copy from Social
  • Security Administration
  • Original Birth Certificate
  • DEERs appointments can be made by using:
  • https://rapids-appointments.dmdc.osd.mil
