Team March is excited to launch the Healthy Base Initiative (HBI), here, tomorrow. The HBI is a thrilling demonstration project for Operation Live Well, a program aimed at making healthy living the easy choice and the social norm.
Operation Live Well is part of the president’s National Prevention Strategy to promote good health for all Americans. This effort involves all agencies within the federal government and includes an aggressive plan for each agency to take action.
“March (ARB) is the base of the future. We have a responsibility to show the rest of DOD how to perform the mission in a fiscally-responsible manner,” said Col. Samuel Mahaney, 452d Air Mobility Wing commander. “Part of that is becoming a healthy population with reduced healthcare costs to the DOD and the nation. This initiative is both vital to our personal health and to the fiscal future of our nation.”
Join the movement as we begin our HBI year. A healthy and fit force is essential to national security. Our service members must be physically prepared to deploy in a moment’s notice anywhere on the globe to extremely austere and demanding conditions.
Currently deployed, Tech. Sgt. Megan Crusher, 452nd Air Mobility Wing, wrote in an Email, “I adjusted to the extreme heat and humidity rather easily and I attribute that to working out regularly prior to deploying.”
During the upcoming year, Team March will be examined for its ability to create environments that enable sustainable healthy lifestyles. Best practices across participants will be shared with the services for further implementation throughout the force. Let’s put March on the map as the spearhead for this project.
Why now? During this time of cutbacks, there is stress. This project allows us to lift our people up, to help them feel better through stress relief, exercise and healthy eating. We are investing in time; the time it will take each of us to get to that healthy self.
No matter how you exercise, the important thing is that you move. If you are new to it, start out small and work your way up. Always strive to do one more than the week before. Don’t feel bad if you can’t keep up with others. Set your own pace and stick with it. Do what you like. Run, walk, dance. Just move.
“Running helps me de-stress, which is very important any time, but especially when deployed and separated from loved ones. Plus it’s fun,” said Crusher.
The HBI is about changes in lifestyle, more than what is required by DOD; seeking environmental changes that drive behavior changes, rather than mandating certain behaviors.
As one of only 11 military installations, and the only Air Reserve Base, selected to participate in the HBI year-long demonstration, March has the responsibility to mirror the Defense Department’s goal of reducing obesity and decreasing tobacco use for all of its uniformed service members – active duty, National Guard and Reserve, its civilian employees and contractors, as well as family members, because when a family is healthy, the member is more effective at his or her job.
The 452nd Force Support Squadron has worked hard to create many different activities as part of Wingman Day events. They have even set up an NBA/NWBA basketball clinic for dependent children ages 6-18 on Sunday. So get involved; show your support. Let the other participants in this project know that Team March means business. Let’s get healthy!
