Team March Airmen compete in the First Sergeants’ Remembrance Run as part of Wingman Day here, Sept. 7. Wingman Day events were designed to build camaraderie, create fun competitions between teams and to highlight the Healthy Base Initiative kick-off.

Team March members participated in Wingman Day, an annual, Air Force Reserve Command initiative focusing on the Wingman concept., Sept. 7, during the combined Unit Training Assembly here.

In a video, presented at commander’s calls, Lt. Gen James Jackson, commander, AFRC said, “The Wingman concept is a culture of Airman taking care of Airman, 365 days a year. Participation in Wingman Day gives us an operational pause to focus attention on what’s most valuable to the Air Force Reserve, our people, our citizen Airmen.”

With the Wingman concept and the Healthy Base Initiative in mind, the planning committee developed a theme focused on fitness and health, building camaraderie and involving positive competitions.

The first event was a remembrance run sponsored by the first sergeants to raise money for the wing’s Airman Relief Fund. Senior Master Sgt. Cynthia Villa, 452nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron first sergeant, who helped plan and coordinate the event, said it was a huge success and goes to show what they can accomplish when everyone comes together to support a cause and have fun.

“It was great to see such a big turnout,” she said.

The run raised $1600 in donations, which will be used to assist Airman with challenges such as unemployment, losses related to natural disasters or other family emergencies by providing them with financial relief through loans or grants.

“Our squadron ran together and if anyone fell behind, we waited for them and finished together,” said Senior Airman Angel Garcia Guillel, 452nd Communications Squadron cyber transport technician.
After the run, the day continued with an additional 18 events around the base and more than 1,000 participants and spectators. During the events, participants and navigators earned points for their units based on the number of their participants and the number of events they won.

The 452nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron earned the bragging rights as this year’s Wingman Day trophy winners with 178 total points.

“Although we didn’t win this year, I’d like the Communications Squadron to challenge AMXS for the trophy next year,” said Garcia Guillel.

After a competitive morning full of Wingman day activities, members and their families attended the 41st annual Military Appreciation Picnic, sponsored by the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce Military Affairs Committee, where they were treated to free food, drinks and music, as well as helpful resources and activities for the kids.

“It’s great that the city sponsors this picnic for us each year. It’s a nice time to unwind from all we do in our jobs,” said Tech. Sgt. Robert Rayos, 452nd CS cyber transport technician.
