Benefits, ID cards to same-sex spouses

In light of the Supreme Court’s ruling that section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional, the Department of Defense (DoD) will construe the words ‘’spouse’’ and ‘’marriage’’ to include same-sex spouses and marriages. Spousal and family benefits, including ID cards, will be made available to same-sex spouses. The Department of Defense will issue ID cards to same-sex spouses of Service members and eligible civilians beginning on September 3, 2013.

Effective date of benefits will be based on date of sponsorship:

  • Married prior to 26 Jun 2013 will be 26 Jun 2013
  • Married after 26 Jun 2013 will be date of marriage
