Prevent Kitchen Fires

Sparky the Fire Dog practices safety in the kitchen by holding a lid to cover the pot in case its contents catches fire. Covering a pot with its lid will quickly smother the fire.

A small kitchen fire can turn deadly in a matter of minutes. Don’t underestimate the speed and power of this type of fire. Most people assume they have more time to escape than they actually do.

When fire strikes, speed is essential. Fires can spread rapidly throughout your home, engulf it in smoke and flames, and make escape nearly impossible in just a few short minutes.

Here’s why it’s so important to learn the recipe for kitchen fire safety:

  • In 2011, cooking was involved in an estimated 156,300 home fires.
  • These fires caused 470 deaths, 5,390 injuries, and $1 billion in property damage.
  • Cooking causes 44 percent of reported home fires, one of every five home fire deaths (19 percent), two of every five home fire injuries (39 percent), and 15 percent of the direct damages in 2011.
  • Two-thirds of home cooking fires started with the ignition of food or other cooking materials.
  • Ranges were involved 58 percent of home cooking fires. Ovens were involved in 16 percent.
  • Clothing was the item first ignited in less than 1 percent of cooking fires, but these incidents accounted for 16 percent of the cooking fire deaths.
