Last week the fitness center was closed on base due to the government shutdown, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on a workout or spend money on a gym membership. Activities provided by services, and in surrounding areas of the base, can help you stay active while having fun. The best part being that most won’t even cost you a penny.
Members of the 452nd Ariel Port Support Flight, 50 and 56th Aerial Port Squadrons, use the base track as an alternative to the fitness center. “The weather in California is ideal for running and outdoor activities,” said Senior Master Sgt. James Zubor II. “We try to get in a group workout or run whenever our schedules allow.”
If running isn’t of interest, try biking. March Air Reserve Base Outdoor Recreation as well as the fitness center, offer a bike loan program that is free of charge. “Our bike program benefits all our members and visitors,” said Cary Kerr,” manager for Outdoor Recreation of the 452nd Support Force Squadron.
Kerr continued, “Besides providing a great way to stay active, bikes are also great for transportation. If you are on temporary duty here or find yourself without a vehicle; using a bike is a great alternative for transportation.”
The bike loan program lends bikes to members, free of charge, during unit training assembly’s and all lunch hours. Loaner bikes also come equipped with a helmet and chain.
For those looking for a way to spice up the hum-drum traditional workouts, non-traditional activities such as Geocaching offer a great alternative. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates, usually by walking, running, hiking or cycling. Participants then attempt to find the geocache container hidden at said coordinate. According to the website, there is even a geocache location at the March Museum along with other nearby locations.
There are many unique activities sponsored, free of charge, through the Force Support Single Airman program at March ARB. Most recently, Airmen had the opportunity to walk on and explore the ocean floor off of Catalina Island during a Sea Trekking expedition.
Another way to snag a free workout is by using free services through The American Council on Exercise “Joining Forces” program. Through this program, fitness centers and personal trainers pledge free training services to all active duty, National Guard or Reservist and their immediate family.
Training services include: personal training sessions, nutrition counseling and free membership to gyms.
The government shutdown hasn’t kept Team March members from continuing to thrive in their pursuit of a healthier, more active lifestyle.
“I have to agree with the Nike cliché,” said Zubor. “There are so many ways and options to stay active, so find an activity you like and “just do it!”
