Chaplain’s Corner

Sometimes it seems that the world around us is spinning out of control. We read about various chaotic events happening everywhere, both abroad and in our own neighborhoods. Some of these events come in the form of natural disasters, human violence, or economic collapse.

Most of us have experienced at least one form of these circumstances, whether on a large scale or small. We find ourselves in a situation that, despite all we are capable of, the events are simply out of our control.

It is natural to panic in these types of situations. We are faced with a challenge that we didn’t experience before, and left to deal with all sorts of emotions about it. Panic is one reaction, while sadness, anger, and even depression are just a stream of others. It is very easy to go to a place in your mind where all you can see or think about is the chaos around you.

But this is not the end. We must remind ourselves that we are not alone, and have not been the only ones to experience hardships, trials and suffering. This is part of what makes us human. So if we find ourselves experiencing pain and hardships, we must remember that we are more than our circumstances, and more than our sufferings.

We each have a specific and wonderful purpose in this life. No matter what happens to us, we still have that source within us to influence others in a positive and purposeful way. When we think that our resources (either economically or physically) have been torn from us, the reality is that we still have much to offer in this life. It is in the hardest times that we need to remember this, because when we do, we ourselves can be empowered and strengthened.
