Maj. Deric Prescott
Theeraya Kline, discusses tax forms with her husband, Staff Sgt. Richard Kline, 912th Air Refueling Squadron, Oct. 29, 2013, at the March VITA Tax Center. Both are volunteers at the March location.

Air Force Reserve Command’s only Base Tax Center is looking for a few good men and women who are willing to be part of an award winning team focused on helping others!

Last tax season, we prepared and filed over 1,000 tax returns, doubling the amount of returns from the previous year. We saved the members of Team March nearly $200,000 in tax preparation fees, and secured over $1,100,000 in tax refunds enabling the members of Team March to keep some of their own hard earned money in their pockets! The March VITA Tax Center was the most successful tax center in AFRC and on a competitive level with some of the largest bases in the USAF! The hard work and tireless efforts of our dedicated volunteers earned March VITA Tax Center a coveted Community Leadership Award from the IRS.

In this coming tax season, we have set a goal to once again double the amount of tax returns filed. This is where you come in; we NEED you in order to attain this goal!

The VITA program allows the members of Team March and the greater March family a much needed service that is completely free and individualized. According to SSgt David Shore, 951 RSPTS/JA, ”there are benefits for the volunteers as well! Military members can use these hours towards the Volunteer Service Ribbon, those of you that are social butterflies will have the opportunity to interact with a variety of fascinating people from all walks of life and facets of the March community, and most importantly you get the satisfaction of giving back and helping your March family with a process that can at times be difficult, confusing, daunting, and downright frustrating!”

There is a role for everyone. If you are good with numbers, volunteer as a tax preparer. You will be working one-on-one with clients, preparing, filing, and helping them understand their tax returns. Experience is not necessary – WE WILL TRAIN YOU on the latest tax preparation forms and software. If you are a people person, volunteer as an interviewer, where you will welcome clients, help organize their paperwork, input their tax information into our system, and manage the overall flow of service.

Currently training for the upcoming tax season will be held during the first two weeks of December, from 2-6 December we will receive training from an IRS representative (for filing federal returns), and from 10-13 December we will receive training from a State of California Franchise Tax Board representative (for filing state returns).

This program is supported by the Wing Commander; volunteers are authorized to put in volunteer hours for the tax center during their duty day whether they are in civilian or military status, saving you from having to spend your hard earned leave while providing a service to the entire installation.

According to Maj Deric Prescott, Active Duty Staff Judge Advocate, civilians are authorized paid time off while volunteering at the base tax center. “Our civilian team members need to work closely with their supervisors to see if staffing levels and mission requirements would allow them paid time off from the job. “Military personnel time is at the discretion of their commander,” said Maj Prescott.

Ultimately the base tax center is looking for people who have a passion for helping others.

Volunteers will need to be able to provide a minimum of only four hours per week, of course, more hours are always appreciated!
To volunteer please contact SSgt David Shore at 951-655-4479 or by email david.shore@us.af.mil. Finally, if you have any tax related questions please contact Mrs. Theeraya Kline 951-655-3659 or by email at marchvita@yahoo.com
