Combined Federal Campaign in full swing at March

Capt. Thomas D. Bockrath
March Air Reserve Base CFC coordinator

March’s 2013 Combined Federal Campaign is in full swing from now through December 15, 2013. We are going to have a fast and furious campaign this year. The impacts of sequestration and the government shutdown forced us to cancel our Kickoff Charity Fair and delay the CFC entirely. Now that we have returned to some semblance of normal operations, everyone can expect to see more activity from their unit’s key workers. They will have charity lists and pledge forms available or you can visit http:///www.cfcofgreatersocal.org to make a pledge online.

The CFC, which began in 1961 is the result of requests from Federal employees to eliminate the disruption of year-round, on-the-job solicitations by charitable organizations. President Kennedy, by Executive Order, directed the Office of Personnel Management to develop a once-a-year, workplace campaign for all Federal employees. Over the campaign’s 52-year history, civilian and military federal employees have contributed more than $7 billion for charitable causes, according to the CFC website.

The campaign was established as a “designation campaign” and offered donors the convenience of using payroll deduction for their charitable contributions. It requires all participating charitable agencies to apply annually for inclusion in the campaign. The agencies must demonstrate to a committee of Federal employees that they maintain sound fiscal management, exhibit high integrity of conduct, and serve the community as a human health and welfare organization. From the list of agencies, donors may designate their donations; confident the charity utilizes its resources properly and conducts its services with a high degree of competency.

One of the biggest challenges this year, particularly with the short campaign, is making sure everyone is contacted and is afforded the opportunity to participate. This year has been hard on all of our March Members, so please take a moment to consider helping those in need.

To participate in this year’s CFC, contact your unit’s key worker or me, Capt. Bockrath, at 951-655-4179. More information is available online at http://www.cfcofgreatersocal.org. Pledges can also be made online using the CFC Nexus option.

Remember, your gift today will touch many lives tomorrow. Please join in with your fellow employees. Everything helps; no gift is too small.
