452 AMW Lessons Learned/Best Practices—Fitness Assessment

  1. Preparation, training and practice leads to better scoring.
    • Wearing the Air Force Physical Training uniform is required for the fitness assessment (FA).
      1. Prepare for your FA by training in “like” weather.
      2. Training in cold weather may require additional uniform attire, such as wearing the Air Force PT uniform jacket and pants.
      3. Practicing your runtime in cold weather may require more warm-up time versus practicing in the warmer months.
    • The FA combination (sit-ups, push-ups, & 1.5 run) is better accomplished by preparing in advance (at least two months) by training (vigorous exercises) at least 3-4 times a week and then practice the FA combination.
    • Write down practice FA results and monitor for better scoring—gauge according to your minimum required fitness scores.
  2. Fitness assessments have been based on first-come, first-serve, and based on the number of Physical Training Leaders available to assist in the FAs.
    • Be prepared to spend at least 3 hours in the FA process.
    • Number of members requiring FAs have been 100-150 per day (Sat. and Sun.).
    • All fitness components (weight, measurements, sit-ups, push-ups, 2.0 kilometer walk, and 1.5 mile run) are accomplished at the new track.
  3. Too many times members will not know their minimum FA passing scores.
    • Knowing your passing scores for all components of your FA is critical.
    • Take a copy of your fitness score card to the track.
    • Fitness scores are age and gender specific, so know when your age-related fitness scores will change.
  4. Wear a watch during your FA – know your start & stop buttons on your watch.
    • Train & practice with a watch, essential for your 1.5 mile run.
    • Smart phones – use/download a stopwatch application to practice your sit-ups and push-ups.
  5. You can take your FA earlier than “scheduled.”
    • IAW AFI 36-2905, para., 3.11.1., “…Airmen may volunteer to take a Fitness Assessment early at their own discretion.”
    • IAW AFI 36-2905, para. ,3.11.1.2. Satisfactory “… members with a current satisfactory Fitness Assessment will test by the last day of the month, six calendar months following the previous satisfactory test (e.g., if member tested on Apr. 15, then member must retest on or before Oct. 31 of the same year).”
